Definitions of "<!g>pluripotent" generally include the potential of the cell to
form derivatives from all three germ layers.
Traditionally, the layers and their derivatives are the <!g>endoderm (giving
rise to the gut), the <!g>mesoderm (giving rise to cartilage, bone, and smooth and
striated muscle), and <!g>ectoderm (giving rise to the nervous system and other
epithelial tissue).
