Definitions of "pluripotent" generally include the potential of the cell to
form derivatives from all three germ layers.
Traditionally, the layers and their derivatives are the endoderm (giving
rise to the gut), the mesoderm (giving rise to cartilage, bone, and smooth and
striated muscle), and ectoderm (giving rise to the nervous system and other
epithelial tissue).
