In September 1998 scientists at Johns
Hopkins University
made a second discovery. They isolated human primordial germ cells
(hEG) from aborted fetuses at five to eight weeks.
These cells are also pluripotent, though it appears that they may not be
immortal. To date they hEG cells have not shown quite
the promise of the hES cells; but further research is
being pursued. Our ethical analysis in this article will not take up issues
related to human embryonic germ cells.
