Philo, Judaeus (c. 20 BCE-c. 50 CE)
Hellenistic philosopher and leading figure in the Jewish community of
Alexandria. He was a prolific writer
who synthesized Greek thought and Jewish faith through his allegorical
interpretation of the Pentateuch, the ancient Greek translation of the first
five books of the Hebrew Scriptures (what Christians would later call the Old
Testament). His interpretive aims and
methods influenced medieval Jewish, Islamic, and Latin Christian philosophy.
