Magna Carta (or Magna Charta)
The Great Charter of liberties, the most famous document of British
constitutional history, issued by King John at Runnymede in June, 1215. English barons compelled King John to sign
and give his assent to this landmark document, so as to grant significant
rights and privileges to his subjects and thus limit royal power.
