In September 1998 scientists at Johns
Hopkins University
made a second discovery. They isolated human primordial <!g>germ cells
(<!g>hEG) from aborted fetuses at five to eight weeks.
These cells are also <!g>pluripotent, though it appears that they may not be
immortal. To date they hEG cells have not shown quite
the promise of the <!g>hES cells; but further research is
being pursued. Our ethical analysis in this article will not take up issues
related to human <!g>embryonic germ cells.
