These conclusions of Aristotles about the shape of the cosmos and the place of the Earth are fine examples of the most characteristic type of Ancient Greek reasoning - deductive from general principles - some of them philosophical and aesthetic rather than astronomical in the ordinary sense - rather than inductive from observations to theories.
