EpistemologyThe
study of theories of knowledge or ways of knowing, particularly in the context
of the limits or validity of the various ways of knowing.
It
is concerned with the nature, extent, sources and legitimacy of knowledge. Key
questions in this area include: what must be added to belief to make it
knowledge? What is genuine knowledge? How is knowledge acquired? Over the course
of western philosophy, philosophers have concentrated on one or two of these
issues to the exclusion of all the others; rarely has a philosopher embraced all
of them.
